Meet the crew

  • I am a passionate, goofy, and creatively emboldened professional. Problem-solving and fostering beautiful environments that encourage a complete sensual (i.e., 5 senses) syntax embedded to support better connection, integration of our perceived sense of safety in our communities. Plus, I just love finding ways to integrate pleasure and play into everything that I do. Innovation moves at the speed of trust, after all! Play is one of the best, most effective ways to create bonds, trust, and safe containers to tackle the hard stuff, fail forward, and succeed together.

    My goal is to empower trust, and cohesion amongst diverse people and bodies of knowledge. I lean into trauma-informed practices, blending physical movement, such as somatic exercises from diverse realms (i.e., yoga, trauma recovery, self-awareness) with storytelling elements.

    Together, we can identify and co-create ways for individuals to alchemize those uncomfortable, possible painful, or even a bit nebulous and messy parts of ourselves. Maya Angelou has a wonderful statement that summarizes this notion well in her third book of essays;

    “We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated...I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.” - Maya Angelou, Letters to my Daughter, 2009.

    Please do not hesitate to provide me with constructive* feedback if you notice that perhaps I have a blind spot, due to the natural limitation of not being able to speak to the experiences of identities that I do not embody, or possess. There is always room to learn, grow, and adapt! It’s an exciting challenge, so don’t be shy to support Body Collab in holding me accountable to equitably accessible content.

    BOUNDARY ⚠: Feedback not provided in a respectful fashion, with the intent to support greater awareness and growth will not be tolerated.

    My identity intersections: ACE Score* = 9, Cys-gendered (she/her), Heterosexual, Autistic, ADHD, Giftedness, C-PTSD, Trauma Survivor, Chronic Illness management & wellbeing.

    How gender-mainstreamed spatial programming in emergency shelters can mitigate gender-based violence against women following disaster events

    ABSTRACT

    There is a notable trend of gender-based violence rates increasing against women following disasters. A lack of adequate shelter is a contributing factor that exacerbates this social issue. A lack of the consideration of gendered needs in planning these shelters’ spaces may result in women being more vulnerable to violence when utilizing emergency shelters. This study employs a case study with data drawn from literature and interviews with practitioners in the field. The cases considered are the Southern Alberta Flood in 2013 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, focusing on two municipalities with significant evacuations due to overland flooding: Calgary, Alberta, and New Orleans, Louisiana. The findings point to a need to consider gender in spatial programming decisions in shelters. Practitioners demonstrated a robust understanding of the unique role that space can play in women’s safety. A key finding is that while gender-based violence stems from existing patriarchal arrangements, and is exacerbated in disaster as men cope with trauma, this phenomenon has spatial components that are also a reflection of the gender gaps in society. How women are considered, or not, when organizing space affects their sense of safety, as well as their vulnerability. Reducing stress where possible for those who rely on emergency shelters while simultaneously integrating gender-mainstreamed spatial programming in planning emergency shelters will support women following a disaster event.

  • In 2015, I adopted Milo when he was a year and a half. He’s been my partner in crime on many adventures! He reminds me of the simple pleasures, the beauty of grounding in your body and connecting with my environment in playful, instinctual ways.

    Like many of my past adventures, Milo insisted he tag along on this journey with Body Collab.

Let's Collab!

Let's Collab!

Offerings & Services

  • Loss is inevitable. It’s painful, messy, isolating, and a million other feelings.

    There is no shortcut for navigating recovery from grief, and traumatic loss. Add in the complication that modern healthcare is not equipped to support chronic or prolonged healing needs…it’s a wonder we function in any healthy adjusted way (HINT: Modern oppressive and inequitable systems rely on this disconnect to function and survive!).

    Each individual’s unique lived experience requires that tools and practices be carefully considered, and adapted to best support you on your journey of healing, recovery that leans into fostering increased self-awareness and a better internal understanding of your needs. Consider this service if:

    • There are heavy feeling s that you no longer want to carry;

    • Feel overwhelmed, abandoned, lost, or isolated;

    • Tired of hearing all the ways you can be “fixed”;

    • Not sure where to start but are tired of feeling stuck;

    • Feel there is no one to talk to that is actually interested in knowing you, as they have already made up their mind (e.g., biases with certain identities, not trauma-informed, etc.).

    Body Collab can walk next to you through this journey, and work with you to identify your own tools for recovery in times of unexpected chaos, loss, and overwhelm. Don’t worry! These are natural parts of being a human day-to-day. Humanity has long wrestled with avoiding uncomfortable things, it’s instinctual. Base instincts shouldn’t be in charge though! While your body will give you fantastic insights, decisions should be made from an integrated place (i.e., incorporating intelligence from the mind, body, and heart). Often, many of us have had lived experiences that can severe our connection to these parts of ourselves. With the connection broken, or weakened, communication may not come through effectively to support you in creating the reality you truly desire to embody.

    There is no reason that these experiences weigh you down on your journey through life though! Let’s explore ways to alchemize these uncomfortable topics and experiences into internal wayfinding and resilience. We can all thrive, and empower one another in difficult times. Healing can’t happen alone though, there needs to be a safe container, filled with opportunities to meet people who can hold space for you, and truly seek to know you.
